Guidance on Applying for Pupillage.

Timetable

  • Applications for 12 month pupillage commencing Autumn 2009 will be accepted between 01 January 2008 and 28 February 2008. Please do not send applications outside this period. Selection of pupils for 2008 has finished.
  • We shall acknowledge your application by email as soon as practicable.
  • Any candidates selected for interview will be invited to attend chambers on a date in March or April 2008.
  • Candidates may be invited to spend 3 days in chambers on a “mini-pupillage”. Potentially we may be spending our careers working side by side. We recognise that it is important for us to meet you other than just during an interview and, just as important, for you to meet us.
  • Candidates not selected for interview will be informed by email only as soon as practicable. No disrespect is intended. We anticipate a great number of applications and there are few enough forests left as it is without using up more paper.

Form of Application

  • Applications should be submitted by email as a Microsoft Word document using the form provided (as from December 2007). Please right-click on the hyper link provided and use the “Save Target As…” command to download the Pupillage application form.
  • The application form should be saved to a convenient location on your computer.
  • Complete the form following the format suggested. Mouse click/tab between the fields. Please do not use colours (as these may be lost if printed out).

Method of Submitting Application

  • When you are ready to submit the application, return to this website and submit the application by following the hyperlink below.
  • We shall retain details of your application and correspondence for 1 year.
  • Correspondence will usually be by email. Please ensure that you keep us informed of any changes of address and telephone numbers etc.
  • You may withdraw your application at any time. Please let us know as soon as possible.

Funding and Numbers of Pupillages and Tenancy Prospects

  • Funding is in accordance with the Bar Council Code of Conduct and in particular to Annexe R - The Pupillage Funding And Advertising Requirements 2003 (to which reference may be made).
  • Chambers anticipates offering up to 2 pupillages for 12 months commencing Autumn 2009 (but makes no commitment to offering any pupillage). Although every candidate is considered on his/her merits, chambers has a good history of offering pupils tenancy. We do not train pupils for training’s sake. We want to train pupils well and we want to share in the benefits of the training by continuing to recruit excellent quality tenants.

Further Information and Communications

  • Referees: we will not usually contact referees unless you are chosen for an interview.
  • We do not undertake to disclose or give reasons for any decision to interview or reject any candidate. We assess applications in accordance with our equal opportunities policy.
  • Communications will generally be by email. Specific enquiries may be sent to pupillage@paradise-sq.co.uk.
  • The chair of the Pupillage Committee is Adrian Jackson. The Senior Clerk is Tim Booth. The Head of Chambers is Gary Burrell QC.

Submit Application (remember – applications open 01 Jan – 28 Feb 2008)

  • Applications are now closed for this year.
  • Can you also add pupillage@paradise-sq.co.uk to your address book, to avoid our email communication being marked as spam.

When you submit your application you will be asked to complete an Equal Opportunities Monitoring form. Please complete it. It does not form part of your application. It has been placed entirely separately from the applications so that you can be assured that the information will not be referred to by those selecting candidates for interview. We are required to collect such information for monitoring by the Bar Council.
